Two of the hip-hop and R&B industry's most powerful and successful artists, both Jay-Z and Beyonce came from humble beginnings. The two discovered a love for music early in life, and were encouraged by their parents to pursue the interest. By age eight, Beyonce was part of the girl group that would later become Destiny's Child. Jay-Z took a little longer to emerge, but was active in the industry by his late teens.

By the end of 1998, both Jay-Z and Beyonce had become major stars; Jay-Z with the release of his third studio album, Vol. 2...Hard Knock Life, and Beyonce with the release of Destiny's Child's self-titled debut album. By 2003, things were changing for both performers. Jay-Z was going into a short-lived retirement in order to focus on his duties as president of Def Jam Recordings, while Beyonce was launching her first solo album. Destiny's Child would be disbanded by the end of 2005, while Jay-Z returned to recording in 2006.

Since 2006, both artists have become two of the leading acts in hip-hop and R&B respectively. Both have individually sold in excess of 50 million records, and Jay-Z and Beyonce tours sell out quickly. The two married in 2008 and their first child, daughter Blue Ivy Carter, was born in 2012.
