Formative Years
Ed Roland, the longtime front man of Collective Soul, started the band by simply gathering musicians in a basement to collaborate on a demo called The Fountainhead. In 1993, this demo would be submitted to local radio stations from Georgia State University’s Georgia Music Show to WJRR in Orlando, Florida. Their single off the album, “Shine,” became an instant fan favorite and was put on a constant rotation. Atlantic Records was able to pick it up and sign them easily onto a contract. Later that year, their debut studio album, Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid, would gain international popularity and double-platinum status. This allowed the band to perform at Woodstock in 1994 while also touring across North America.
The band went on to release several well-charted albums and singles. Right after their first album, the band released a self-titled album that went triple platinum as well as had a 76-week run on the Billboard 200 chart. In 1999, their album Dosage became certified platinum with its single “Heavy” remaining number one on the Mainstream Rock chart for 15 weeks.
In 2004, Collective Soul created their own record label called El Music Group, which would allow the band more independence in the production of their music. Later that same year in November, the band released their album Youth where their single “Better Now” reached the top ten on the Adult Top 40 radio as well as was used in Special K cereal commercials. In May of 2007, their single “Hollywood” became the theme song for the television competition series, American Idol. These are only some highlights of their outstanding career.
Current Pursuits
After their 25th anniversary in 2020 with the Now’s The Time Tour with Gin Blossoms, Collective Soul proved they were only just getting started with the next phase of a music-filled career. Later in 2020, they went ahead and released their album Blood, which proved that the band does not plan on retiring any time soon as they continue to make some of their best music yet.
