Khalid Donnel Robinson, known as Khalid, is an American singer and songwriter. He was influenced by famous performing artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper, A$AP Rocky, Father John Misty, Frank Ocean, Grizzly Bear, Chance the Rapper, Lorde, India.Arie, James Blake, but most importantly, his mother.
Khalid was born on February 11, 1998 in Fort Stewart, Georgia. He spent his childhood in various locations including Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Fort Drum in Watertwon, New York, and six years in Heidelberg, Germany because of his mother’s career in the military. During high school, Khalid studied singing and musical theatre. During his junior year, the family moved to El Paso, Texas.
Khalid began writing and creating music in high school. He posted his early works to SoundCloud, where he began to gain popularity via the internet. By July 2016, he reached number two on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artist chart. His single “Location” began charting while Khalid was featured in many publications, including Billboard, Yahoo, Buzzfeed, and Rolling Stone. This led to Khalid’s rapid success.
American Teen (2017) - is the debut studio album by American singer Khalid. It was released on March 3, 2017 by Right Hand Music Group. The single “Young Dumb & Broke” was the most popular song on the album, and was supported by two additional singles: “Location” and “Saved”. The album was a successful breakthrough for Khalid: in October 2017, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA, then received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, while the single “Location” was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
