Melody Makers
Although born in Wilmington, Delaware, Stephen Marley spent most of his time growing up in Kingston, Jamaica. His father was the legendary Bob Marley, which Stephen and his family drew from for musical inspiration. In 1979, when Stephen was only seven years old, the Marley family created their band called Melody Makers which included Stephen and his siblings: Ziggy, Sharon, and Cedella.
After their father’s death in 1981, Melody Makers continued to create music. After making a string of singles, the family band released their first album entitled Play the Game Right in 1985. However, it wasn’t until 1988 when their third album, Conscious Party, was released and the group became an international sensation. The album became US platinum and the group became one of the youngest recipients to ever receive a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album.
In 1989, the group released their fourth album called One Bright Day. This was when Stephen Marley got his nickname, “Raggamuffin,” as he was the first one out of his siblings to to include dancehall rap and deejaying. The group continued to release music until the early 2000s and won three Grammy Awards overall.
Solo Career
Stephen Marley spent most of his time after Melody Makers as a producer while being background vocals for his brother, Ziggy Marley. Stephen Marley took the first step into his solo career when he released his first solo album in 2007 called Mind Control. He then released an acoustic version a year later. His third and fourth solo albums, Revelation Part I and Revelation Part II, were released in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Stephen Marley’s first three albums received Grammy Awards and all four of his albums have reached the top of Billboard reggae charts.
Stephen Marley has always stayed close to the voice of reggae music and has a very familiar sound to his father. Marley continues to travel and bring reggae across the world through his concerts.
