Jo Koy is a Filipino American comedian. His rise in success is from his appearances on The Adam Carolla Show, where he would do impressions. His family jumped around due to his father being in the Air Force. Jo eventually enrolled to the University of Nevada, but dropped out to focus on stand-up comedy.
Jo Koy, whose real name is Joseph Glenn Herbert, adopted the name based on a nickname his family gave him as a child. His aunt would call him "Jo Ko", meaning " My Jo". He thought she was pronouncing the word as "Koy" and the name stuck ever since.
Everything about the beginning of his stand up career to even the material he uses today can be accredited to Jo's mother. From encouraging Jo to perform in talent shows, Jo gained the confidence to make comedy his life and he eventually moved to Los Angeles.
Jo's first show was in 1994 in Las Vegas. This led to him landing a regular spot on Catch a Rising Star at the MGM Hotel and Casino. He was even going door to door at one point to sell tickets to his shows at Huntridge Theater.
