By the late 1970s, punk rock's first wave was coming to an end, and a new era was beginning for new wave and electronic dance music. New Order is an electronic alternative rock band that was formed in Salford, England in 1980. Currently comprised of members Bernard Sumner, Gillian Gilbert, Ian Curtis, Stephen Morris, and Peter Hook, New Order creates a sound of music that is a blend of new wave and electronic music, both of which were incredibly popular at the time of the band's formation. New Order's integration of post-punk with electronic and dance music made them one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of the 1980s
Known as one of the most influential and critically acclaimed bands of the 1980s, New Order's music was a staple in clubs during this time and their music can still be heard in clubs today. New Order's music mixes rock with dance music, as can be seen on signature tracks such as 1982's "Temptation", 1983's "Blue Monday" and 1987's "True Faith".
Founding member Hook stated that the band's shift from playing cold dark tracks from 1981 to producing electro/rock tracks from 1982 was inspired by the music of German electronic group Kraftwerk, US rock band Sparks who had produced disco/electro-rock music with producer Giorgio Moroder on their No. 1 in Heaven album, and also the Moroder/Donna Summer collaboration on "I Feel Love". New Order's collaboration with New York DJ Arthur Baker was inspired by the records' sounds of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force.
The group's album art earned them the status of icons in the alternative community, and has shown considerable longevity. According to an unsigned "Allmusic" text, the band are also regarded as "the first alternative dance" music group with their fusion of "used icy, gloomy post-punk with Kraftwerk-style synth-pop" and were also labeled as synth-pop, post-punk, new wave, dance-rock and electronica.
They have heavily influenced techno, rock, and pop musicians including the Pet Shop Boys, 808 State, Arcade Fire, and Moby, and were themselves influenced by the likes of David Bowie, Neu!, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire and Giorgio Moroder. They have also significantly influenced electro, freestyle and house. New Order's Kraftwerk influence was acknowledged by their single "Krafty", which had cover art referencing "Autobahn".
New Order has released a total of eight albums and the song "Blue Monday" (which was not included on any New Order album until the 2008 re-release of the 1983 album Power, Corruption and Lies) has the distinct recognition of being UK's best-selling 12" single of all time.
Many years later, the band's relevance is still intact thanks to timeless songs like “Bizarre Love Triangle” and “Blue Monday.” Catch the band's return to the stage during the New Order and Pet Shop Boys 2020 The Unity Tour.
