About Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen is an emotional and entertaining Broadway musical that touches on the topics of mental illness and suicide. It features the main character Evan Hansen (originally played by Ben Platt) who struggles with social anxiety and loneliness. The story follows Evan as he deals with the death of one of his classmates and searches for his own life purpose. The music and lyrics are by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and the book is by Steven Levenson. Premieres for the musical started at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. in July 2015. The musical ran there for a little over a month before moving Off-Broadway to the Second Stage Theatre. The official opening was on May 1, 2016 and featured six original cast members from the Washington, D.C. production. This production last until May 29, 2017. Then Dear Evan Hansen made its debut on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre. Previews began on November 14, 2016 and then official opening night was on December 6th. Ever since hitting the Broadway stage, Dear Evan Hansen has been received by critical acclaim. It has won numerous accolades for its outstanding music, production, and acting. At the 2017 Tony Awards, the original Broadway production was nominated for nine awards. The awards that were won out of the nine nominations are listed below:
