To have some privacy, Will Toledo began recording vocals in the back of his car which brought inspiration for the name “Car Seat Headrest.” Toledo soon began releasing several EPs throughout his college experience and soon found his voice in indie and lo-fi music. When he transferred to College of William & Mary, Toledo produced released his first concept album entitled Twin Fantasy, which amassed a huge and dedicated online following.
Car Seat Headrest soon became a full band in July of 2013 when Will Toledo invited fellow classmates to play alongside him. The band recorded and released their live album called Live at WCWM: Car Seat Headrest. A month later, Toledo released a two-hour long double album entitled Nervous Young Man, in homage to his previous stage name. Car Seat Headrest’s final solo release album, How to Leave Town, would come out in 2014. The album dove into more complex song structures with electronic instrumentation.
In September of 2015, Will Toledo left his home state of Virginia to the city of Seattle, Washington. It was there where Toledo recruited Car Seat Headrest’s bassist and guitarist through Craigslist. A month later, the band released Teens of Style, the band’s first compilation album not released on an online platform. Less than a year after that, the band released its second album entitled Teens of Denial, which garnered international popularity. Bringing joy to fans across the world, Car Seat Headrest re-recorded Toledo’s solo album, Twin Fantasy, and re-released it as Twin Fantasy (Face-to-Face). Soon after, the band began touring with Naked Giants across the country.
As of recent, Car Seat Headrest has been experimenting with different sounds and material for their live performances. In 2020, the band will release their first ever studio album called Making a Door Less Open. Toledo describes the album to contain elements of many popular music genres including EDM, hip hop, and rock and roll. Despite the experimentation of genres, the album still has a touch of Toledo’s introspective personality.
