History of Music and Concerts

Music has changed drastically since the art form was first discovered thousands of years ago. There are different theories as to what exactly the first types of music consisted of because it is impossible to know for sure. Some archeologists suggest that the first forms of music were most likely created from readily available percussion instruments, such as sticks and rocks. Alternative theories suggest that the first musical instrument was the human voice itself, while others suggests that music wasn't even created by modern humans, but by Neanderthals, who may have carved out animal bones to make instruments around 43,000 years ago.

Fast forward a few thousand years to 3500 BC, and the Egyptians had created clarinets, harps and flutes. In 1500 BC the Hittites created one of the most important musical instruments; the guitar. This led to the creation of other string instruments such as the violin.

During 4th Century BC, the Theater at Epidaurus was constructed. Although built for theatre performances, the near-perfect acoustics in the ancient Greek theater led the way for modern amphitheater designs.

During the medieval period, which lasted from around 1150 to 1400 AD, music was usually created and regulated by the church. Gregorian chants and polyphonic music were popular during this time period, and new forms of music were almost unheard of because of the church's strict rules governing melody and rhythm. Music fans certainly didn't have the choice of concerts they enjoy today!

During the Renaissance period, which began in the fifteenth century, musical freedoms increased drastically and because of that so did the sound of music, as it changed from religious to secular themes. Royal courts often employed virtuoso performers, beginning an era of royal patronage of music performers and composers that continued through the nineteenth century.

Following the Renaissance period came the introduction of the Baroque period, which lasted from around 1600 to 1750. During the Baroque period, tonality was created, and composers used more elaborate musical ornamentation than was used during the renaissance period. Also, the bedrock was laid for forms of music that are still present today such as the orchestra, opera, concerto, sonata, and cantata. With the Baroque period also came the emergence of many well-known composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, and Alessandro Scarlatti.

The Classical period began after the Baroque period and lasted until about 1820. Much of the music that was composed during this 70-year period was much less complex than music from the previous period, and featured a lighter and clearer texture. The best-known composers from this era include Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. During this time, vocal music were the most popular types performed at music-only concert events, while concertos and symphonies often served as the instrumental introduction and interludes for operas and church services.

The Classical period was followed by the Romantic era, which lasted until the early 20th century. The music during this time period paralleled the expressive and emotional elements found in other art forms during the same period. Composers used music to embrace deep emotions such as grief, love, and tragedy, which gave their music a very different sound from that created in past musical eras.

Over the course 20th century and into present day, music has seen vast changes, with many genres transforming into new sounds in this relatively speaking, short time period. Genres such as blues, jazz, and country, helped spawn genres, including rock and roll, hip hop, pop, alternative, and R&B, all of which are prevalent forms of music today, alongside older genres of music, including opera and classical.
