About  Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lynn Lopez is an American singer, actress, dancer, and producer. In 1991, Lopez began appearing as a Fly Girl dancer in Living Color, where she remained a regular until she decided to pursue an acting career in 1993.

Early Life

Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24, 1969 in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents Guadalupe Rodriguez and David Lopez. She has an older sister, Leslie, and a younger sister, Lynda, a journalist. During her final year of High School, Lopez learned about a film casting that was seeking several teenage girls for small roles. After acting in the low budget film My Little Girl (1986) as Myra, Lopez realized that she wanted to become a “famous movie star”.

Career Beginnings

Jennifer Lopez’s major-breakthrough came with her leading role in the 1997 film Selena. Her success in the film led to a Golden Globe nomination, and she became the first Latin actress to earn over $1 million USD for a film. Afterwards, she went on to star in Anaconda (1997) and Out of Sight (1998). Lopez ventured into the music industry with her debut album, On the 6, which helped propel the Latin pop movement in American music. The album quickly became popular throughout the U.S. and served as the foundation for Jennifer Lopez’s musical career.

Jennifer Lopez Discography

On The 6 (1999) - Praised for its conservative yet dynamic music style that combined Latin with pop and R&B, critics greeted Lopez’s musical debut with a generally positive response. Her singles “If You Had My Love” and “Waiting for Tonight” were the fan favorited songs on the album and peaked at number one and number ten in the United States, respectively. The album included features from Big Pun, Fat Joe, and Marc Anthony. Additionally, the album went certified triple platinum by the RIAA after selling nearly three million copies in the United States: not bad for a debut album!

J. LO (2001) - Overall, the album received mix reviews: on one hand, critics praised Lopez’s use of Spanish and dance material, but criticized its manufactured sound. Regardless, Jennifer Lopez debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 during the first week while simultaneous debuting her film The Wedding Planner, making her the first entertainer to have a number one selling album and film released at the same time. The album went quadruple platinum in the United States, making it her highest selling to date. The album featured a duet with Chayanne on the song “Dame (Touch Me)”, but the most popular songs was the single “Love Don’t Cost a Thing”.

This is Me…Then (2002) - Prior to the release, Lopez began a high-profile relationship with Ben Affleck, which served as her main inspiration for the album. Her most popular son from the album, “Jenny from the Block” featuring Styles P and Jadakiss of the Lox became an international success peaking at number three in the US and even featured Ben Affleck in the music video. Additionally, LL Cool J was also featured on the song “All I Have”. The album reached number 12 on Billboard’s Top 200 year-end charts, and went certified platinum twice by the RIAA, selling more than 2.6 million copies.

Rebirth (2005) - Upon its release, Rebirth received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised its up-tempo material, while others were unfavorable of its mild content and Lopez’s vocals. The album featured Fat Joe on the song “Hold You Down” and Fabolous on “Get it Right”, which was the most popular song on the album. Additionally, the album went certified platinum by the RIAA.

Como Ama una Mujer (How a Woman Loves) (2007) - This was the fifth studio album and first Spanish album released by Jennifer Lopez by Epic Records. Consisting entirely of ballads, the album talks about love and heartbreak, and is organic in its instrumentation and introspective in its lyrics. The album received more negative reviews than Lopez’s previous work, citing that the album was too serious and questioned a lack of highlights within the album.

Commercially, though, the album became one of the first Spanish albums to debut within the top-ten on the US Billboard Top 200 and the third highest debut sales in the United States for a Spanish record. The singles “Que Hiciste” and “Me Haces Falta” were the most popular songs on the album, and there were not additional features included.

Brave (2007) - Inspired by her marriage with Marc Anthony, Jamiroquai and Sade, Brave features predominantly samples from old classics mixed with funk and R&B. The album received mix reviews from critics and underperformed commercially, becoming her first album to miss the top ten on the Billboard 200 chart. However, the album spawned two worldwide singles: “Do It Well” and “Hold It Don’t Drop It”, which were the most popular songs on the album.

Love? (2011) - The album was cited by Lopez as her most personal album to date, taking inspiration from the birth of her twins Emme and Max, and her own experiences with love. While the album received mixed reviews by critics, the album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 Chart. The most popular song on the album was the hit single “On the Floor” featuring Pitbull, which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, Lil Wayne was featured on the album’s other single, “I’m Into You”.

A.K.A. (2014) - The album presented listeners with a combination of her previous musical background in urban pop, dance-pop, and Latin with R&B. Her two promotional singles on the album, “Girls” and “Same Girls” which were the favorited tracks. Other features included T.I., French Montana, Iggy Azalea, Rick Ross, and Pitbull. However, the album did not do as well commercially as her previous works. Many critics spoke unfavorably of the album’s mixed styles, but Lopez still earned a spot at number eight on the US Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Personal Highlights

Jennifer Lopez’s personal life has been in media highlights since the very beginning of her career. With her husband at the time Marc Anthony (real name Marco Antonio Muniz), the two had twins: David and Emme Maribel. The twins were featured in the March 11, 2008 issue of People, in which the photographs became the most expensive celebrity picture ever taken at the time at $6 million. By 2014, though, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony got a divorce, and she is currently dating Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez. In March 2018, Lopez began standing up and sharing her own #MeToo movement story, and has since been an active advocate for the Time’s Up movement.
