About Twenty One Pilots
Formation of the Band
Tyler Joseph, who is the lead vocalist for Twenty One Pilots, grew up with a passion for music. He began playing music when he found an old keyboard in his closet and would practice by mimicking old radio melodies. In high school, Joseph was offered a scholarship to play basketball at Otterbein University but turned it down to pursue his music career. While attending Ohio State University, Joseph met Christopher Salih. Salih recommended he and Joseph start a band together. Joseph agree and the pair began collaborating together. Before their first performance, Joseph invited child hood friend Nicholas Thomas to play bass for them. At that point their band was unnamed. While studying at university, Joseph was reading a play where twenty-one pilots were killed during a war. The meaning behind the play correlated with Joseph and that’s where the band got their name. In 2009, the three young artists moved into a house together and began working on their first album. They self-released their debut album titled Twenty One Pilots on December 29, 2009 and began to tour Ohio.
Lineup Change and Regional at Best
Salih and Thomas left the band in 2011 for personal reasons. Drummer Josh Dun joined Joseph to make Twenty One Pilots a two-piece band. The new Twenty One Pilots self-released their second album called Regional at Best on July 8, 2011. Later that year, Twenty One Pilots performed at a sold out Newport Music Hall. It was almost unheard of for an unsigned group to sell out this venue which caught the attention of multiple record labels.
In April of 2012, Twenty One Pilots signed with Fueled by Ramen under Atlantic Records. The band began working on their third album, which was to be their first studio-released album. The album was titled Vessel and dropped on January 8, 2013. It was their most successful album yet, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard 200. It is now certified Platinum in the United States by the RIAA. Singles featured on the album included “Holding on to You”, “Guns for Hands”, “House of Gold”, “Fake You Out”, and “Car Radio”. “Holding on to You” was the band’s first charting single, peaking at number 11 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. A few months later, the band announced they would be joining Fall Out Boy on the Save Rock and Roll Arena Tour with Panic! at the Disco as an opening act. After the tour was completed, Twenty One Pilots made appearances at numerous popular music festivals including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Boston Calling, and Firefly. The tour with Fall Out Boy and festival performances gave Twenty One Pilots the traction they were looking for.
Twenty One Pilot’s fourth album and second studio album dropped on May 17, 2015. The album was entitled Blurryface and its released was preceded by three singles: “Fairly Local”, “Tear in My Heart”, and “Stressed Out”. “Stressed Out” became the band’s highest charting single, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on both the Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Songs charts. Blurryface peaked at number 1 on the Billboard 200, becoming Twenty One Pilot’s first number 1 album. The album won Top Rock Album at the Billboard Music Awards and the band itself won Top Rock Artist. They went on an international tour in promotion of Blurryface for the Blurryface Tour. The United States leg of the tour featured Echosmith and Finish Ticket as opening acts. A year later, Twenty One Pilots announced a second tour for Blurryface called the Emotional Roadshow World Tour. At the American Music Awards in 2016, the band won Favorite Pop/Rock Duo and Favorite Alternative Rock Artist. They also performed a mashup of “Heathens” and “Stressed Out” at the award show. Twenty One Pilots won their first Grammy Award on February 12, 2017. The award was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Stressed Out”.
The band left the public eye to work on creating new music. Their silence was broken on July 11, 2018 when the band released two new songs and announced the title of their next album. They said the album is titled Trench and will be released on October 5, 2018. Twenty One Pilots will be going on tour in support of their new album. The tour is call The Bandito Tour and will kick off on October 16th at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. If you want to see Twenty One Pilots live, now is your chance.
