The Lion King
The Lion King musical is one of the most successful shows to ever hit the Broadway stage. Based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name, the theatre adaptation has won the hearts of kids and adults across the world. The music for the show is by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and musical score created by Hans Zimmer. The book for the show is by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi and the show is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.
The musical originally debuted in Minneapolis before hitting the Broadway stage. Opening night was on July 8, 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre. It was an instant hit. Previews on the Broadway stage began shortly after on October 15, 1997. The official opening night was on November 13 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. In 2006 the show moved residency to the Minskoff Theatre where it has been playing ever since. The Lion King is Broadway’s third longest running show, only behind The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. The Lion King also holds Broadway’s record for the highest grossing production of all time, grossing over $1 billion. This number doesn’t even include the numerous other productions of the show that were shown off Broadway. There have been The Lion King productions in Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Toronto, Sydney, Shanghai, Paris, Las Vegas, Singapore, Madrid, and Mexico City, just to name a few. It has become a world-wide phenomenon that people across the globe have enjoyed.
The Lion King’s original Broadway production has won numerous prestigious awards. It was nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 1998 and out of those nominations it won the following:

- Best Direction of a Musical (Julie Taymor)
- Best Choreography (Garth Fagan)
- Best Scenic Design for Musical (Richard Hudson)
- Best Costume Design for a Musical (Julie Taymor and Michael Curry)
- Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Donald Holder)
The production was also nominated for twelve Drama Desk Awards in 1998 winning eight out of the twelve. In addition to this, The Lion King won a Grammy Award in 1999 for Best Musical Show Album.
