Aubrey Drake Graham, more commonly known as Drake is arguably one of the most successful rappers of the 21st century. The Canadian born rapper first got his career started with the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation. But it wasn’t until after he left the show in 2007 when his music career took off. Drake signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment and ever since he has taken the music world by storm. Drake holds numerous records in the music industry. He has the most charted songs for a solo artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 with 154 songs. He has the most simultaneously charted Hot 100 songs in a single week with 24 songs. Drake has also spent the most time on the Hot 100 at 431 weeks. Not to mention he has the most number one singles on the Hot Rap Songs charts. Most notably he holds the record for most Billboard Music Awards with 13 awards. Drake is a worldwide superstar who has sold an estimated $86 million in global sales. And with a new album about to drop and a massive tour about to kick off with Migos, it does not seem like Drake will be slowing down anytime soon. Drake was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario. His mother is an Ashkenazi Jewish Canadian and his father is a Catholic African American. The two diverse cultures gave Drake a unique upbringing and he was often teased for his mixed heritage. His parents divorced when he was five years old and after he remained in Canada with his mom while his dad moved back to Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Forest Hill Collegiate Institute where a fellow classmate’s father was an acting agent. This connection landed Drake a role as Jimmy Brooks in the teenage drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. Drake eventually dropped out of school to focus on his acting career. He later finished his high school degree in 2012.
From Acting to Rapping
Drake stopped appearing on Degrassi in 2007, when he decided to focus his efforts on his music career. In 2006 he self-released a mixtape entitled Room for Improvement featuring popular artists such as Trey Songz and Lupe Fiasco. This mixtape sold over 6,000 copies; a good start for an artist who had never produced music before. Drake soon after formed his own record label called October’s Very Own (later shortened to OVO). With his newly formed label he released a second mixtape in 2007 called Comeback Season. On the mixtape was Drake’s first hit single “Replacement Girl” featuring Trey Songz. The song included a sample of “Man of the Year” by Brisco, Flo Rida, and Lil Wayne. Drake kept Lil Wayne’s verses on the song and did the rest of the song himself. This led Jas Prince to play the song for Lil Wayne. Once Wayne heard the song he called Drake up and asked him to fly to Houston and join him on his Tha Carter III tour.
After joining Weezy on tour, Drake released another mixtape with OVO. Drake’s third mixtape was called So Far Gone and featured artists Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Omarion, Lloyd, and Bun B. Two hit singles off the album were “Best I Ever Had” and “Successful” which were both certified Gold by the RIAA. “Best I Ever Had” peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and “Successful” was listed by Rolling Stone on the “25 Best Songs of 2009” list. Shortly after the release of So Far Gone, Drake officially singed with Young Money Entertainment.
Thank Me Later
Drake released four singles before dropping his first studio album. The first single was “Over” which peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance. The second single was “Find Your Love” which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. The third single featured Lil Wayne and was called “Miss Me”. “Miss Me” peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also later nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Drake’s first studio album, Thank Me Later, dropped on June 15, 2010 to critical acclaim. It debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. It was the bestselling debut album for any artist in 2010. Other artists featured on the hit album included Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj, Swiss Beatz, Young Jeezy, The-Dream, and Jay-Z.
Drake began to work on his second studio album Take Care. Prior to the release of Take Care, Drake released three singles for the album. The first and lead single, “Marvins Room”, peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The next single was “Headlines”, debuting at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single, “Make Me Proud”, featured up and coming female rapper Nicki Minaj. “Make Me Proud” peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. After the release of the first three singles, Drake finally dropped Take Care in November 2011. It peaked at the top of the Billboard 200 and is now certified 4X Platinum by the RIAA. Other hit singles from the album include “The Motto” (feat. Lil Wayne), “Take Care” (feat. Rihanna), “HYFR” (feat. Lil Wayne), and “Crew Love” (feat. The Weeknd). The album also won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album in 2013. Drake’s success was increasing more and more with each song he released. At this point, he was unstoppable.
Nothing Was the Same
Drake’s third studio album, Nothing Was the Same dropped in September 2013. It was preceded by two singles, “Started from the Bottom” and “Hold On, We’re Going Home”, the former peaking at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the latter peaking at number 4. Other hot singles from the album included “All Me” (feat. 2 Chainz and Big Sean), “Pound Cake” (Jay-Z), “The Language”, “Too Much” (feat. Sampha), and “Worst Behavior”. Nothing Was the Same was nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammys in 2014. It also won Album of the Year at the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards and Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards. In the very beginning of 2015 Drake released a recording project called If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. Drake refers to the project as a mixtape but there is debate over whether or not it is a studio album because it was released commercially through his record label. Regardless, the mixtape debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 and broke Spotify’s first-week streaming record with 17.3 million streams in the first three days. Later that year, Drake released another successful mixtape, this time in collaboration with Atlanta rapper Future. This mixtape was called What a Time To Be Alive and was recorded in just six days. Despite being worked on for such little time, this mixtape also debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. Both of the mixtapes Drake released in 2015 became certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Views and More Life
Drake’s fourth studio album, Views, proved to be just as successful as his previous works. Views dropped in April 2016 and debuted at number 1 (again). It remained at number 1 on the Billboard 200 for thirteen consecutive weeks and achieved quadrupled platinum status. Some of the hit singles from this album included “Hotline Bling”, “One Dance” (feat. Wizkid and Kyla), “Pop Style”, “Controlla”, and “Too Good” (feat. Rihanna). The album won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album at the American Music Awards in 2016. It was also nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2017 including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album. “Hotline Bling” won two Grammy Awards in 2017 of which were Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Song Performance.
About a year later after the release of Views, Drake released another project entitled More Life. More Life was a mixtape but Drake refers to it as a playlist. Mixtape or playlist, More Life was Drake’s seventh piece of work that was number 1 on the Billboard 200. The playlist featured an array of talented artists including Giggs, Black Coffee, Jorja Smith, Sampha, Quavo, Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Kanye West, and PartyNextDoor. At the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, Drake broke another record by winning thirteen awards in one night. Some of the awards were Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Billboard 100 Album, and Top Billboard 200 Artist, just to name a few.
What Is Next For Drake?

Then on April 6, 2018 Drake released the first single for his upcoming album called “Nice For What”. “Nice For What” also debuted at number 1, replacing his own “God’s Plan” at the number 1 spot.
