The Jacksonville Jaguars were founded in 1995 as part of the NFL’s expansion program. Although it seemed unlikely that Jacksonville would gain an NFL franchise because of the city’s smaller market, NFL owners voted 26-2 in favor of awarding a team to Jacksonville. Headed by Tom Coughlin for their first season in 1995, the Jaguars finished with a record of 4-12. The next season, the franchise finished the regular season with a record of 9-7, which was good enough for a playoff appearance. The team would go on to make the playoffs for three more consecutive seasons. In 2000, the Jaguars’ performance began to slip, as they finished the season 7-9. After a 6-10 finish in 2002, Tom Coughlin was fired and was replaced by head coach Jack Del Rio. Del Rio led the Jags to playoff appearances in 2005 and again in 2007. Del Rio was fired during the 2011 season, after the team had posted a 3-8 record through the first 12 weeks of the season.
