The Seattle Mariners are in a rebuild phase following a bleak couple of seasons as of recent. The Seattle Mariners have a rich history, even without a World Series champion under their belt. In 2001, the team set the American League record for the most wins in a single season with 116 games. They have been playing at T-Mobile Park since 1999, which features a retractable roof that acts as an umbrella rather than a climate controlled enclosure. The Seattle Mariners 2020 schedule is now available, so get your Seattle Mariners tickets today!
Based out of Seattle, WA, the Mariners are named after the prominence of marine culture in Seattle. They've earned the nickname "The M's", which was a prominent part of their uniforms and logo in the '90s. In the team's early years, the Mariners played at Kingdome, a stadium that doubled as a baseball and football field. They were established in 1977 as part of the West Division in the American League. Other teams in their division include the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels, and Oakland Athletics. In 1999, the Mariners moved over to Safeco Field, which is where they currently play today. Safeco Field has a seating capacity of 47,715 and has the second largest scoreboard in the league at more than 11,000 square feet.
The Mariners had their first real taste of success in 1995, when they won their first division championship and beat the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. Ken Griffey Jr.'s slide into home in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the decisive game of that series remains one of the greatest moments in team history. Another particularly memorable season was in 2001, when the team won 116 games, setting the American League record for most wins in a single season. Most recently, in June 2012, the Mariners nabbed their first no-hitter in team history, using six different pitchers; shortly thereafter, in August 2013, Felix Hernandex pitched a perfect game, the first in team history, and the 23rd in MLB history. The team currently has six members in its Hall of Fame, including Griffey, Jr. and Randy Johnson.
The 2018 MLB season is the Seattle Mariners 42nd season in franchise history. The team entered this season with the longest active playoff drought in all professional sports – the Mariners have not been to the MLB playoffs since 2001. Seattle began their 2018 season on March 29th against the Cleveland Indians. Their regular season will wrap up on September 30th against the Texas Rangers. As one of eight teams with no World Series title, the Mariners have entered this season as determined as ever, with star players like Robinson Cano and Felix Hernandez supporting their efforts.
