Career of Many Talents

It wasn’t until the late 1990’s that Ricky Gervais began his comedy career of standup gold. In 1998, Gervais made his television debut on Channel 4’s Comedy Lab series. In 1999, his fame blew up as he participated in the satirical comedy series, The 11 O’Clock Show. This was when he became known for his character’s politically incorrect statements and vulgar language.

A couple years later, he began touring his first trilogy tour with Rubbernecker soon followed by Animal in 2003 and Fame in 2007. While touring, he also was a part of the production and cast of the British television mockumentary sitcom, The Office. Not only did he played the role of David Brent, he also helped create, write, and direct the series. The Office has now been remade several times for television across the world. Other than being on television, Ricky Gervais has also contributed to major television comedy show throughout his career. Gervais wrote for shows such as Bruiser, The Jim Tavare Show, and The Sketch Show.

Ricky Gervais then directed his show called Extras, which debuted in July of 2005. The premise of the show was about extras working in the entertainment industry. Of course, the television sitcom also starred Gervais as Andy Millman, who was a background artist. Gervais received a Primetime Emmy Award in 2007 for his portrayal of his character. Plenty more successful television shows written by Gervais came about after this including The Ricky Gervais Show, Life’s Too Short, and Derek. Most recently in 2018, Ricky Gervais announced his Netflix special called SuperNature with shows running through 2020 and 2020.
